It’s that time of year- fall, yes, but even more excitingly- it’s engagement season! If you are newly engaged and have started planning a wedding, we want to help you out! I’m sure that you are quickly realizing that with planning a wedding comes a LOT of new responsibility. Logistics you’d likely never considered before, as you’ve never had 100, 150, or 200+ of your family and friends all together for a meal. When Cam & I meet with potential clients, we always encourage them to use us a resource for vendor recommendations. We have been to our fair share of weddings, after all! Cam & I love to share about the vendors we really enjoy working with, and we know that our experience can be helpful for you. Then I thought, “Hey, this could be valuable information for others as well!”

It has been said that “A rising tide lifts all boats”, and Cam & I are firm believers in this idea. We consider it such a privilege to work with local wedding vendors. There are so many talented companies in Regina, it is crazy! I love seeing how we can each use our gifts to best serve our couples on their wedding day. And it is so cool to see those talented people succeed in their respective businesses! It has been on my mind for a while to start a blog series highlighting just a handful of the very talented wedding vendors Regina has to offer. This not only gives us a way to share what we love about them but also allows you to see how they can best serve you on your wedding day!

Our first Regina Wedding Vendor Spotlight is featuring Regina florist, Blooms by Alison. We have worked with Alison for a number of years, and we are always excited to see her creations! The bouquets she creates are absolutely stunning and blow us away every single time. I LOVE the unique features she adds to bring each bride’s vision to life, and that they are not always your traditional wedding flowers. She created my absolute favourite fall bouquet for a wedding we shot a few years ago (pictured above). Even looking at the pictures of it still just leaves me in awe. We’ve asked Alison some questions, to allow you to get to know her and her creative process a bit better!

Q & A with Blooms by Alison

Tell us a little bit about you- how did you get started in floral design?

I always tell people that I was born into floral design! My family owns Gale’s Florist and I started working there as a child. I used to package seed beads and cut flowers in the back room with my cousin. I would sweep the floors, cut the flowers, clean the buckets… You name it, I did it- I started at the bottom! One day I asked my mom (who is also my boss) if I could start designing floral arrangements. I could never do the traditional one-sided arrangement, so I taught myself how to arrange vases, hand-tie bouquets, and to eventually style entire weddings!

Tell me a little bit about the design process. What input does the bride have in the process?

The bride is the most important person in the process! I try to get a feel for what she wants and try to recreate her vision. Having pictures provided by the bride are helpful, but each floral designer has their own unique way of designing.

What is your favourite flower to include in your bouquets?

I love ranunculus and anemones. They’re so delicate!

What is your favourite thing about doing wedding floral arrangements?

Making the bride happy! I always say that if a bride cries after seeing her flowers, I’ve done my job.

Tell me about your favourite floral trend that is happening right now, or you one you foresee happening soon?

The floral trend right now is what I refer to as ‘an organized disaster’. Brides are loving greenery and the look of a disorganized bouquet. I really love that pink and burgundy are in. I’m hoping the use of unique flower pairings stays around for a while because it really makes for a beautiful bouquet!

What is one thing you wish brides knew about the floral design process?

That it is back-breaking labour! Florists don’t just put pretty flowers together. Each stem is meticulously cleaned, and I may cut an entire bunch of flowers just to get the perfect stem. It is a lot of work to get your bouquets looking absolutely perfect! I have an entire team of chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists who help keep me together!

How many weddings do you take on for the season?

Way too many to count! Though I can only take so many weddings as I am the only one creating the bouquets. I can say that I once did eight weddings in one weekend and let’s just say I’m never doing that again!

Thank you so much, Alison, for taking us through a little bit of your process! If you are a bride looking for flowers, I would recommend stopping in at Gale’s Florist to see what they can do for you. From all of the wedding bouquets we’ve seen, I can honestly say that you will not be disappointed! Follow Blooms by Alison on Instagram to see more of her beautiful creations.

xoxo
